Management & founders
Kaisa Helminen, M.Sc, is the CEO of Aiforia Technologies Oy. Kaisa joined Aiforia in 2014 and has previously worked for international companies Sartorius, Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. and a Finnish biotech company Finnzymes Oy. Kaisa has a strong background in life science sector where she has gained almost 20 years of experience in the global business. She has a wealth of experience in global sales, marketing and strategic product management in life science businesses.
Johan Lundin, MD, PhD
Johan is one of the co-founders of Aiforia as well as a Research Director at the Finnish Institute for Molecular Medicine (FIMM) at University of Helsinki and Professor of Medical Technology at Karolinska Institute. For more than 15 years he has developed technologies for diagnostic decision support with cloud-based and mobile solutions that allow the process to be performed remotely, by a human observer or using automated computerized analysis.
Mikael Lundin, MD
Mikael works as the Director of Concept Design at Aiforia. He is a pioneer in web-based virtual microscopy and has launched the first practical applications in 2002. He has published a series of central studies in virtual microscopy together with key opinion leaders in related fields. Mikael is fluent in a wide range of programming languages, and he has a special interest in database design and imaging.
Kari, M.Sc.Tech, is one of the co-founders of Aiforia. Kari is an experienced life-science entrepreneur having worked in the industry for over 30 years. He was one of the founders and Director of Marketing at Finnzymes Oy for 25 years, until its acquisition by Thermo Fisher Scientific in 2010.
Tuomas Ropponen, M.Sc.Tech, is the Chief Technology Officer at Aiforia Technologies Oy. Tuomas has extensive experience in developing deep learning AI and machine vision based systems and cloud infrastructures. He has previously worked for more than 20 years in international companies Outotec and Sartorius Biohit. Tuomas was one of the founders of Delta-Enterprise, known today as Roima Intelligence Inc.
Thomas Westerling-Bui, PhD
Thomas received his PhD in cancer biology, focusing on the cell cycle and transcription, from the University of Helsinki Medical School in Finland. He completed a post-doctoral EMBO fellowship at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, researching the genomics of breast and prostate cancer. Tom joined Aiforia to advance the new potential of cancer biology, pathology, big data, and artificial intelligence.
Sales and Marketing
Bill Maloy is the Sales Director for Aiforia’s North American operations. His focus is on broadening the company’s reach within the pharmaceutical and research industries across the region and building long term strategic partnerships with our customers. Bill has close to 20 years experience in sales and marketing within cloud and SaaS based startups with a focus on the life sciences sector, such as Cartagenia & GenomeQuest.
Joeri Blauw MSc, MBA is the Sales Director for Aiforia’s European operations.
Joeri has over 20 years of commercial experience in the pharmaceutical and medical devices industries. He has worked with AstraZeneca, Roche, Medtronic and Philips, in a variety of medical specialties, ranging from cardiology to pathology. In his last assignment he was responsible for European digital pathology sales in the life sciences businesses. Joeri’s focus is to expand Aiforia’s R&D business, as well as to introduce Aiforia’s platform into the clinical diagnostics space.
Mikael Jääskeläinen is responsible for global sales and customer relations management for Aiforia. Mikael joined Aiforia in March 2014 having previously worked for international companies Sartorius, Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. and Finnish biotech company Finnzymes Oy. Mikael has more than 25 years of experience in sales and marketing in the life science sector.
Emma holds an MSc in microbiology and immunology from University College London. Prior to returning to Finland and joining Aiforia she worked in marketing and communications for a number of years across biotech and pharma, living in Cambridge, UK while working at Amgen and then Abcam.
Mariia has a degree in marketing from Lahti University of Applied Sciences. She has experience in online marketing and communications. Prior to joining Aiforia she worked at Rovio Entertainment. At Aiforia, Mariia is responsible for social media, digital ads, and the website management.
Sami Blom PhD
Sami’s PhD dissertation, from the University of Helsinki’s Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM), provides novel tools for the analysis of tumor tissue in prostate cancer. From specializing in the fields of translational cancer research and in vitro diagnostics Sami’s work now extends to the development of tissue staining and imaging methods for pathology. At Aiforia Sami dedicates his time to developing AI models for a wide variety of applications while managing a large in-house annotation team.
Anna Knuuttila DVM PhD BSc Econ
After completing her DVM at the University of Helsinki and working at an animalveterinary practice for a few years, Anna started the Veterinary Pathology Residency program, finalizing her PhD in viral epidemiology and diagnostics in 2015. Anna then received a national specialization degree in infectious animal diseases and then worked as a pathology researcher and university lecturer. Anna now combines her scientific expertise with her knowledge of deep learning as an AI pathologist at Aiforia. Her goal is to help transform pathology from descriptive to quantitative science in order to unleash the data hidden in tissues. Anna believes that it is pivotal that pathologists have control over AI development and validation in order to create safe and useful models.
Hanna-Kaisa Sihvo DVM PhD Dipl ECVP
Hanna-Kaisa is a board-certified veterinary pathologist and holds over a decade’s experience in the field of diagnostics as well as research pathology. Her PhD from the University of Helsinki focused on muscle degeneration, but over the years she has also worked with cancer and inflammatory disease models. Hanna-Kaisa is excited by the new possibilities that AI-based image analysis provides for improving the accuracy and quantification of pathology data. At Aiforia she provides pathology expertise for AI model development.
Darshan Kumar PhD
Darshan has a background in biomedical sciences from Leiden University with a doctorate in cell & molecular biology from Helsinki University. He has a versatile breadth of experience from virology and immunology to food sciences, structural biology, and microscopy. At Aiforia, Darshan is responsible for AI model creation, customer on-boarding, user problem solving and ultimately ensuring customer success in creating and deploying AI models for image analysis tasks and challenges. Scientific creativity interests Darshan and working with end users for a successful project completion drives him.
Lindsey Smith PhD
Lindsey is an experienced neuroscience researcher with a strong background in electrophysiology, surgery, stereotactic viral injections, animal husbandry, and wet bench techniques. During graduate and post-graduate training her research was dedicated to a wide variety of neuropathologies and diseases such as elucidating mechanisms of Alzheimer’s disease. In her current role at Aiforia, Lindsey assists researchers world-wide to create custom algorithms that profoundly expedite data analysis while simultaneously reducing human bias in data processing.
Pekka is the CEO of Desentum Oy. He holds board positions in several biotech and pharmaceutical companies. He is one of the founders of the Finnzymes Group and served as its CEO for 25 years until its acquisition by Thermo Fisher Scientific in 2010.
Monita is a Hong Kong native with a professional career in Arthur Andersen NYC. She is a serial entrepreneur who has started three successful companies, including Ascend Capital Partners. She founded her own accounting firm in NYC in 1992 and her second company, Ascend Capital Partners in Beijing in 2002.

Timo is the CEO and co-founder of the rapidly growing gaming company, Small Giant Games. Timo is an experienced international digital growth executive and a startup activist with a strong concept building background.
Jukka is an experienced IT business executive currently working as the VP&Managing Director EMEA, APAC and Japan at Pegasystems Inc. Jukka has a strong background in the IT industry in companies like SAP and HP as well as experience in managing companies and business units globally.
